Wind turbines are some of the worlds largest rotating structures in the world. The dominant trend in the industry leads to bigger and bigger wind turbines especially in offshore wind farms. This is most visible in the size of the rotors that have increased to as big as 400 feet in diameter today. Turbines have also become smarter in order to try and harness the most available energy from the wind. Embedded sensors enable wind turbines to process the environment around them and automatically orient the turbine to be in the best possible orientation to extract the most energy possible. This has a major effect when trying to design turbines downwind of other turbines the implementation of smart turbines allows designers to account and maximize the efficiency of the turbines as the available wind becomes more turbulent.
